Socially Responsible Shopping:
(Special thanks to Sally for compiling this comprehensive and oh-so-helpful list!)
- NoSweatApparel.com
- JusticeClothing.com
- UnderTheCanopy.com
(The Banana Republic of socially-conscious clothing, according to the New York Times.)
- BuyBlue.org
(organizes companies by who they give political donations to)
- NewDream.org
(includes household goods)
- Alonovo.com (now with CodePink affiliation!)
(It's like Amazon.com (like shopping in a mall with lots of brands, only online), but with social & environmental ratings. Now, there's an affiliation with CodePink national, so if you do any shopping here, the entire group will benefit! Yay!)
- American Apparel
(Sort of The Gap - in terms of clothing style & price - of non-sweatshop clothes. Unfortunately, it's been dealing with some issues of sexual harassment - not to mention union-busting - so you might want to do a bit more research into this store before placing your orders!)
- UnionWear.com
- LoveyHowl.com
- PristinePlanet.com
- Rawganique.com
(hemp & organic cotton)
- Loomstate jeans (via RevolveClothing.com)
(Loomstate jeans are organic, designer, and totally hot. Also totally expensive.)
- EcoMall.com
(for links to a ton of individual stores and sites carrying all-natural or non-sweatshop clothes)
- Timberland.com
(Timerland just has really great labor policies & community relations.)
- Little Tikes
(Little Tikes (subsidiary of Rubbermaid) has a policy that it does not make violence or war-related toys, and does not advertise to children. It even resigned from the Toy Manufacturers of America after the trade association took a stand in defense of such advertising.)
- Hershey's Chocolate
(A controlling share of Hershey's is owned by the Milton Hershey school for disadvantaged children (compare that to Nestle's awful baby formula record).)
- And although we won't post links to their sites, Sally notes that Gap (incl. Banana Republic & Old Navy), Nike, Levi, and Reebok, while all having miserable records in the past, all made huge steps in 2005 in their transparency and reporting on human rights (for example, Nike now discloses each and every factory they source from!). Hopefully they'll continue to make advances, and we'll feel comfortable posting their websites on our socially-conscious shopping list, too!
Hey! Have a great suggestion for this list? Please let us know! We'd love to hear from you.
